Job Posting: Data Scientist

TL:DR — Basis Set Ventures is a venture capital firm that invests in early-stage startups that are using artificial intelligence to help us work more productively. We’re looking to hire a data scientist who is crafty and efficient at using code to surface potential blindspots in our investing strategy.

Venture capital as an industry is heavy on opinions and light on facts. We pride ourselves on our focus and first principles approach to investing in machine intelligence startups, but no human (or machine) on its own can perfectly parse signal from noise. So we’re taking a page from our portfolio and betting that human + machine is the way to go.

We’re looking for a data scientist to work intimately with our investing team to build out and execute a quantitative sourcing strategy. Our team is lean so an ideal candidate will be able to straddle the line between investor and engineer to solve problems. And of course we will work with you to develop your understanding of venture capital and startup ecosystems.

We need someone who:

— Is a wiz at Python (or other relevant language) and query languages

— Experienced with using machine learning techniques to solve real world problems (examples + GitHub please)

— Strong foundation in statistics

— Works well without a lot of structure

— Can quickly understand our investment strategy and problem solve

— Would enjoy working with our portfolio companies on select problems

— Willing to locate to the Bay Area
